RC RACING - WHAT DO I NEED TO COMPETE?

At Norfolk Buggy Club we primarily cater for 2 Wheel Drive (2WD) and 4 Wheel Drive (4WD) buggies in either 1/10 or 1/8 scale, these vehicles are designed to be raced by all abilities and on any surface. Tracks throughout the country are built on grass, dirt or clay, astro-turf, tarmac or mixture of surfaces. Included in their design are features that are placed to test the driver’s skill and ability to the full.  Humps, hollows, camber changes, jumps, a mixture of bends and a fast straight make for a perfect day’s racing. Drivers qualify over four five minute plus last lap runs starting on a 2.5 second stagger, their best two finishing positions are then used to work out their starting position for the final. Lining up on a traditional grid for the finals we race it out over five minutes plus last lap to decide the days champions in the chosen classes.

The cars have many features including fully independent suspension that can be tuned with a range of springs and oils, adjustable camber links, slipper clutches and other features that enable the driver to fine tune a cars handling to suit the track conditions and the drivers ability. One Lithium Polymer (LIPO) cell pack is used to power a noise-free electric motor to speeds in excess of 40 miles per hour, or if you fancy something a bit noisier try a Nitro fuelled 1/8 scale rallycross car on our dirt track.

A list of recommended motors and batteries can be obtained from the Electric Board on the BRCA website, while your local model shop will happily talk you through the pros and cons of what is available in your all important price range. It's also worth taking a trip out to a club day to see what equipment is used at the club where you might end up racing.

Buggies can be purchased in either kit or ready to run (RTR) form from specialist model shops and can be built in a matter of hours from kit form. No mechanical knowledge or specialist tools are needed to get you running. Tools are included in the kit and a text and picture instruction manual are included to direct you through the build process and help you with setting up the cars handling.

The basics to get you up and running would include a:

  • Car Kit, either a 2wd or 4wd off road buggy.

  • Transmitter and Receiver

  • Battery Pack (two packs are recommended so one can be charging while you use the other)

  • Charger

  • Motor

  • Electronic Speed Controller (ESC)

  • 12 volt leisure battery
